2005 Boise Metrogain
Second Boise Metrogain attracted scores of the orienteering fans to the foothills. In spite of sage brush being in full
bloom and sneezing at highest, experienced athletes and newcomers blazed through the steep hills of Hull's Gulch, Camelback,
and Stewart Gulch to find controls on the courses specially designed for this event. On the beginner course Peggy, Kathryn,
and Sue teamed to find all 10 controls and finish under one hour. We hope to see you more at our events! Experienced Jeff
Decker showed the beauties of the orienteering sport to Dona, Emma, and Maggie. They solidly finished on the second place.
Masha once again showed why she is considered one of the best in the USA by winning the course. On the intermediate (short)
course only Dondi and Sage tried to find all controls. No doubt that Sage was distracted by the prairie dogs! On the longest
advanced course tough competition unfolded right from the start. Passing through the intermediate controls by the tennis
court in Camelback park and at the crossing to the Stewart Gulch area all competitors were within two minutes from each
other. Decisive longest leg between controls 2 and 3 at the Stewart Gulch decided the fate of the competition. Jeff finished
at the Hillside School first with the perfect time just a minute above the predicted one hour and thirty minutes. Michael
finished second within the sight of Jeff. Well done for the first time with real orienteering maps! Lee on the bike edged
Doug and Bob for the third place. It was difficult course for the bike challenged competitor as in some places he must carried
the bike up the hill and abandoned it to get to the controls down the gullies. And finally Karin finished in two hours and
twenty six minutes being the only woman who took on the long course. Congratulation to all!
Many thanks go to Andy Hill for organizing and manning the registration table. Special thanks go to Bill Leahy who pre-run
the long course two days before the competition and alerted me to one specific control that needed to be relocated.
See you all at our next meet! Enjoy results, photos, and maps below!
