It was a beautiful clear winter day, just right for orienteering. ....in the morning while I set out the controls. Unfortunately the weather gods weren't as kind to the participants, sending a rainy cold front through right between the hours of 11:00 to 1:00pm. Luckily we got my rain shelter up before the rain hit in earnest. The adverse conditions must have been appealing as we ended up with a very good turnout. The early starters that hadn't used a plastic map case came in with soggy crumpled bits but still seemed to manage to find all the controls. The advanced course provided good spectating as depending on route choices, the participants could cross by the finish several times. Bill L. started two minutes before Sergey and held him off so they were neck and neck as they passed the finish and chased over the pedestrian bridge around the half way mark on the course. The times are very fast and close. There were two controls close together at number 5 on advanced that nearly tripped up a couple of people with Paul ending up with the wrong punch, which he chose to go back and correct, his original finish time was about 10 minutes quicker. My strategy on setting the advanced course was to have long legs that provided route choice options and to use new control locations. The beginner course numbers were increased at the last minute when a group of Boy Scouts appeared as we were starting to pack up. We were able to salvage the beginner course for them but the Intermediate was a lost cause, which was too bad because the eager lads dashed through the Beg. course in short order and were ready for more. Unmapped construction in BSU hindered route choices especially for the beginner course where the construction blocked the best route to the finish from their last control, but they dealt with it and it didn't seem to slow them down much. The courses were on the short side and several of the advanced people wanted more of a challenge so they tried doing the Intermediate course a 'la Sergey by memory with no map. They carried punch cards so we could check their accuracy; Jeff was happy with a rare win over Sergey.
Thanks to all who came, and see you next time for a score-O at Willow and Veterans Park, Sat. Jan. 20 -starts at Willow park.
Also looking forward to the Feb. Ski/snowshoe- O meet, Sunday Feb. 25 at the Little Bear Basin ski area near McCall. The Payette Lakes Ski marathon is the day before, so all you hard core XC skiers plan a weekend of it!
