Saturday, November 16th was cool and clear at Veterans Park -- perfect orienteering
conditions. Even before 11 am the meet director was surprised by a very big group of
girl scouts (Brownies 687) who came to try orienteering. At one moment he was even
afraid that he didn't prepared enough blank maps for the troops :)
Three usual levels of courses were offered. The Beginner course was 1.50 km, 9 controls
- set at the easy and flattest (considering that it is all flat) portion of the park. The
Intermediate course was 3.00 km and used all 18 controls at the park and around the lake.
The Advanced course was 2 loop run around the lake with 5.00 km total length and 18 controls.
On the Beginner course, newcomers Cliff Callow, Jennifer Finke, Chuck Kinkead, Jennifer Garretson,
Nic Stover, and the wonderful Troops 687 explored the park and tried orienteering as a sport. I hope you all
liked it. With more skills more enjoyment will come. I hope to continue to show and teach
basic and advanced orienteering techniques during our future meets. Masha Velichko once again
showed her class and clocked just a little bit above 20 minutes.
On the Intermediate course, we were all glad to see again Dan Herring who came with his friendly dog to
do first exercise after the operation. David Byrd flew through the course in 33:44, Bob Didisse
(the builder and ATV driver) was second. Pair of Kathy Parker and Todd Smith found all controls
in 62:48.
The Advanced course saw quite heated competition among our most experienced. Jeff blazed through the
course in 28:50. Dough LaMott clocked second result. Andy Hill and Karin Didisse showed close results
with Andy edging Karin a little bit.
Unfortunately, one of our veteran members Ole Bergset was not lucky this last Saturday.
Ole is doing just fine after the hospital visit. We wish him well. We hope to see Ole
soon after the recovery, as we know his spirit and love for the sport.
Be sure to make it out to our next monthly meet at Simplot Sports Complex,
Saturday December 14th, 11-1pm. Andy Hill always designs challenging and interesting
courses for us.
