Many brave souls faced the hazards of driving the canyon and the inclement mountain weather to orienteer at Ponderosa Park this Saturday. The competitors fought icy winds off the lake as they copied the courses, but the rain had let up by the time they headed out. Unfortunately, the unfamiliar dark, dense woods combined with poor mapping on the north end of the map to give several people trouble with #6 and especially #7 on the advanced course. I knew there was a problem when Bill Leahy finished and there was no sign of anyone else for quite a while. Jeff, with a late start managed to pass him up for the win, but Bill was happy with the close margin. The fall leaf-drop had improved the density of the shrubs, allowing passage through the light green mapped areas.
We were glad to see some McCall locals come out for the event with excellent results; Doug M.'s persistence is paying off with a respectable time, despite the problem with #7 and recovering from a recent injury. Elijah and Andy had strong competition on the beginner course from two local families that know their stuff!
Dondi had dog trouble on the intermediate course and had to call it quits, giving Bob the win.
Thanks to all who helped with control pickup, we wouldn't want to leave those out too long for the deer to eat! I've got my work cut out for me and promise an improved map before another meet here.
