Apologies for the extreme lateness of this meet report -- evidently the original never made it out....

After a cool and piney August meet in McCall, the CTOC orienteers returned to Boise. Saturday, September 22 dawned hot and sunny, and got hotter and sunnier as the day progressed. Perfect weather solar-powered individuals...a bit too warm for the rest.

Three courses were set. The first two (the Easy and Intermediate courses) were standard loop courses. The Easy course was 2.27km, 90m climb, and runnable totally on paths. The Intermediate course was 2.93km, 135m, and was more technically challenging than the Easy course. The Advanced course was 5.04km, 315m climb, and competitors had the choice of either using a standard map, or a map with all trails removed (which made navigation more difficult).

On the Easy course, Masha Velichko, soloing for the first time (although closely shadowed by father Sergey) was narrowly edged out by newcomer Desirae Schildhauer. Adult leg length has its advantages...

No one deigned to try out the Intermediate course, instead the rest of the field went for one of the two Advanced courses...

Competition was fast and furious on the two Advanced courses, although some questionable control placement made for somewhat random times. On the course with trails, Dave Bergset showed that experience counts for a lot, coming in well ahead of relative newcomers Dan Herring and Joell Ramirez (who was giving newcomer Doug LaMott a true baptism by fire).

On the very challenging Advanced course without mapped trails, Sergey Velichko and Vladimir Gusiatnikov (who flew up from the Bay Area just to try out a Boise course) were neck and neck. Jeff Black spent more time struggling with the questionable control placement, but still managed a very respectable time against two national-class orienteers.
