Hi all- this Sunday up at Bear Basin was a beautiful day for orienteering, a bit warmer than had been predicted. The marshes were dry and the sheep long gone, so all was good. A few newcomers found us and tried the somewhat difficult short course, all succesfully. Young Samantha did the Novice under her own power with just a bit of navigation help from dad, and came in with big smiles. Look out she's a natural! Masha was the only one to give the very nice intermediate course a try and did well with it. The competition was hot and heavy on the advanced course with a very good turn out and close times. Zbynek, who was visiting from the Seattle area, held the lead until Sergey got in after a late start because of doing the Int. course with Masha. There was very little overlap in the courses between the Intermediate, Novice and Advanced courses so there shouldn't have been too much advantage for the people that went on shorter courses before doing the advanced. One of the Advanced controls was very close to the edge of the map and on a bit of an indistinct feature so several competitors reported trouble with that. Looks like Sergey and Jeff have some serious competion from Lee, he's doing great!

My thanks to Bill for helping with instruction and doing the whole novice course with Tracy, and all who helped with the control pickup, especially Ole who got stuck with the water jugs!

See you at next month's National Orienteering Day event, Sept. 15 at Veterans Park!

Also- the upcoming Metrogaine Oct. 21 will start at Ann Morrison park and will be on the city streets with a 3 hr. time limit. Register at 10 am. start at 10:30. A standard novice course (between beginner and intermediate level) will also be offered in the park as a good follow up to the N.O.D. event.
