Meet Results: The Third Annual Bear Run Run
Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22 2007
I ran it on a Sunday and it made me ill

Wow -- two days to orienteer in the beautiful, open and runnable Idaho City woods -- who could pass
up a chance for an opportunity like that? Well, evidently quite a few folks...whatever else you could say
about the weekend, the woods weren't exactly crowded. However, those who chose to brave the heat
and head up to Idaho City were able to enjoy some very neat terrain, and only an hour out of Boise.
Saturday was a tour of the northern end of the map -- beautiful, mostly gentle hill-and-valley terrain
with fast, open woods and plenty of trails. Jeff & Donna Decker took on a pretty advanced Beginner
course, and still came back smiling. Jeff then proceeded to decimate the Intermediate course, closely
followed by Sergey & Masha. Donna went out to try the Intermediate course solo, but decided the
entire pie was a bit much for one day. And, after his pre-run "hint" to Dondi sent her off on a tour of
the wild areas of the map, your erstwhile meet director swore off any more hinting. Meanwhile, the
competition was tight on Advanced, with Sergey making a rare bobble by not being able to find one of
the controls. This opened the door for Michael Tobin, who blew through the course in just over an hour
(and then rode his bike back to Boise -- gah!), with Jeff Black in close pursuit. Bill Pilcher and Karin
Didisse easily broke the two hour mark, and walkers Brad Lowe and Dawn Caldwell had an enjoyable
hike, and still managed to make it back in three hours.
Sunday's courses were an introduction to the southern half of the map, taking the competitors to both
steeper slopes and very technical hydromined terrain. Even with the deliberately shortened courses,
the heat and tough terrain took their toll. Dondi Black took advantage of the lack of hints from the
meet director to blow through the Intermediate course in just under an hour. Masha, running solo
(while her parents wore a new ditch in the terrain while pacing) had one minor parallel error on a trail,
but still managed to finish in good time. On Advanced, Sergey redeemed himself by completely
trashing the course in under 40 minutes. The terrain proved to be too much for Jeff Black, who spent
the morning having "learning experiences" in terrain radically different from anything else in the club
inventory. Bill Pilcher and Karin Didisse rounded out the performances on the course, with both
surviving the heat and the monster hill leading into the finish.
All in all, a very fun weekend -- too bad more folks weren't able to make it up to enjoy the area!
If you missed Idaho City, be sure not to miss the upcoming meet at Bear Basin in McCall, ID -- Sunday,
August 26th. The woods are waiting for you!
