Saturday, June 26th dawned sunny, hot, and humid (for Boise, anyhow). By the 11AM first start (OK, 11:15...yours truly was a little late getting the controls set out), it was downright steamy. On the menu were the standard three entrees -- a short, simple Beginner's course, a longer and more technical Intermediate course, and a challenging Advanced course. The Beginner's course was a standard short tour around Julia Davis Park, while the Intermediate course was a somewhat longer and more technical circle through both Julia Davis and BSU. The tour-de-force was the Advanced course -- a 17-control "sprint" course. Attendance was light, with only a couple of takers on the Beginner's course with the Leahy's sprinting around the course (with mom nearly crawling the last bit, while being towed by daughter), and the Christie's doing a more casual stroll, except for the sprint into the finish. On the intermediate course, Dondi Dawley, on her first solo outing, breezed around the course, while the maze of buildings on the BSU side of the map proved too much for Masha Velichko, who gave it the ol' college (OK, elementary school) try before heading in before Dad got too worried. The heaviest competition was on the advanced course, with Sergey Velichko edging out Jeff Black for the win, with Lee Scott and Bill Leahy both finishing strong. Kristin Ritzenthaler, handicapped with having to take the long way around with the baby jogger, still made a strong showing (on the other hand, Kayla, worn out with having to help mom with the navigation, was asleep before they crossed the finish line). Bill Pilcher had more than a little trouble with one of the controls on the BSU side, but stuck with it to the end. A big "thanks" to Jeff Black and Dondi Dawley for sticking around after the meet and helping to pick up the controls! Don't forget the upcoming 2-day meet in McCall this July 17 & 18. Great chance to try some courses in the woods for the price of a park meet. Maps will be pre-printed.
