Saturday, May 19th dawned clear and cool, with the promise of excellent conditions for orienteering. By 11AM, temperatures had begun to reach into the 60's, and the winds began to pick up, but conditions were still excellent for those hardy souls who arrived to orienteer. It was time to up close and personal with outcroppings of the Idaho Basolith.

The Advanced course started out with three long, pretty non-technical legs, mostly offering a trade-off between long trail runs or shorter runs through much rougher terrain. After the meet discussions showed the trail runs to be far and away the faster choice on these legs. The leg to #4, in the bottom of a gully, was more technical. Those who noticed the nearby power line had a much easier time of it. Leg #5 dropped down into and across Hull's Gulch itself, requiring a bit of skill at reading the contours. Legs 6, 7, and 8 all gave tradeoffs between running cross-country (contouring or not) and dropping back into and out of Hull's Gulch to take advantage of the trail. Legs 6 and 8 both turned out to be faster on the trail, while leg 7 was a bit closer, with the cross-country route seeming to take the prize. Sergey almost broke a sweat blazing his way through the course. Dave, Jeff, and Neil made the next three places quite a contest, although Neil managed to get a bit thrown by the strange vegetation around control #3. Bob & Karin, coming out Sunday, took a more leisurely approach to the course (given the winds Sunday, they probably belly-crawled most of the course).

The Intermediate course shared the first three legs with the Advanced course, then took a short-cut through a long reentrant complex (where control #4 lurked) into Hull's Gulch. Leg #5 cut across Hull's Gulch, with some technical map reading needed to chose the correct reentrant for #5. Leg #6 was shared with the Advanced course leg #8. Dasha & Brian took the "take time to smell the flowers" approach, saving all their energy for a photogenic sprint to the finish.

Our next local meet (hosted by Jeff Black) will be at Stewart Gulch West on Saturday, June 30th. The preceding Monday 6/25 the City of Trees Orienteering Club will be hosting a relay meet at Cle Elum, Washington, as part of the Pacific North West Orienteering Festival. See Pacific Northwest Orienteering Festival 2001 (PNWOF2001) Web site for more information.
