Julia Davis park of Boise greeted all 71 participants of the National Orienteering Day (sponsored by Unites States Orienteering Federation) with wonderful weather.

The Friendly staff of the CTOC arranged courses and beginner clinics for everyone who came to enjoy the sport of orienteering, experts and beginners alike. The event attracted a number of newcomers including girl and boy scout troops under the leadership of their respectful scoutmasters. Recent publication in the Idaho Statesman by Natalie Bartley: Understanding orienteering caught the attention of the local community and many people came to try for the first time "Sweden Chess" in the friendly park environment.

A Score Orienteering course with 22 controls sprinkled across the park and BSU campus was offered as the main attraction of the day. I hope people in the park who attended other sport events such as the Varsity Tennis Tournament and Idaho Great Potato Marathon had an opportunity to glimpse at the newcomer to the sport arena. We hope more people and families will start attending our events to spend time together with nature.

The familiar group of Andersons and Judy Beeson took first place in the Beginner Groups category. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th groups earned the same points, although the Alexanders family spent less time and were 2nd with Jim Thornburg and troops and Cindy Dwyer and troops to follow. Some troops managed to find all controls! My congratulations to all who tried and liked this new activity. The troops were under the leadership of Dan Brickey, Ken Dwyer, Tom Mouser, Rod Brady, Dan Petty, Shelee Brady, and Kim Juda.

In the Beginner Teams Category (pairs) Rob and Tim Gibson took the first place with 17 points. The Teams of Terri Rowe and Bryan and Dave Johnson and Joel Hesby were respectfully 2nd and 3rd. I want to also mention brothers Ryan and Brandon Reeves who came after a soccer session and spent time on the course earning a respectful 14 points. Darrell and Kifer Fugate team found 8 controls and finished within the allowed time limit. The Teams of Jackie Copeland, Mike Rhinard and Annette Phillipp, Pete Lounsbury found all 22 controls.

The Beginner Solo category was easily won by experienced 7 years old Masha Velichko. No wonder, considering her running abilities. David Dacolias was second with 6 points. Tricia Blahan and David Varlydegraf found all controls.

Intermediate category was won by Joan Dodd. The happy pair of Dasha Velichko and Brian Deeds took second place with 11 points.

Our advanced runners followed the advice of the course setter, found all controls, and posted very good results. Jeff Black finished within perfect 28:51. Andy Hill and Dan Herring clocked under 45 minutes with Andy edging Dan by 32 seconds. Karin Didisse chose to explore Julia Davis park only due to the late start and found 16 controls in 22:58. Given her time she may finish under 40:00 for all controls, outpacing our masters!

Special thanks go to Andy Hill, Karin and Bob Didisse, and Jeff Black for helping to organize the event and conducting beginners clinics.

Once again - congratulations to all who tried and liked it! We hope to see you frequently at our events. We have prizes for our winners in each category (places 1 to 3). Some were awarded right after the meet. Please contact meet director Sergey Velichko (ph. 368-5908) and/or come to our next meet to pick your awards!
