Our meet last Saturday on the new Simplot Sports Complex map garnered several takers. While it started off a bit humid and warm, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped several degrees halfway through the meet, offering a cooling breeze to steaming orienteers. The date also happened to be the rough equivalent of local soccer finals and of several softball games, enhancing the difficulty of route choice a bit as participants could no longer take the straight line route across the soccer fields. This location could also prove a bit more hazardous to our control inventory, as a couple runners managed to save a couple that threatened to walk off (moving control syndrome), and we eventually did lose one near the center of the park. We plan to avoid the soccer season next time!

Jason Sims, a guest who drove all the way from Washington state to attend our humble meet, discovered the dizzying speed of a fast park course. (He was actually in town for a wedding, found us on the web, and decided to squeak this in as practice for a future summer race.) Andy Hill displayed remarkable fortitude and hit all controls despite a stress fracture in his foot that is slowly healing. Returning guest Rick Smith and daughter Ilana signed up for a membership and proceeded to tackle the course with gusto, and saved a moving control to boot. Bonus points... Sergey and Masha blazed through the entire suite and edged out the Smith team for 2nd place in the Beginners category. David Bergset arrived a little later after navigating the park to find the start. After a slightly roundabout route to the first control (perhaps due to my hasty start time), he quickly found the remainder with time to spare despite post-Robie syndrome and edged out Jason for 2nd place. Sergey returned to the course solo and managed to set the speed standard while offering David a little extra breeze as he flew by.

Course was Score format, with 9 5 point controls and 4 10 point controls. Every minute over the allotted time deducted two points. The final results:

We return to the green hills of Hull's Gulch next month (April 19th.) Andy Hill will be directing. (We can hear the evil chuckles already.) See you then!
