March 2006 Score-O Meet Results

We had a great turnout at this past weekend’s orienteering meet with lots of new faces and many of our regulars. Besides individual participants, we had teams of moms & daughters, fathers & sons, fathers & daughters, fathers & jogging strollers, husbands & wives, and friends.

It was our good fortune that military personnel, Craig Ullman and Walter Clarke, out of San Diego, were able to fit our meet into their trip to Idaho to inspect military facilities.

Saturday’s meet provided a lot of competition in both the advanced and beginning divisions. While the score-o format is geared towards speed orienteering (due to the 45 minute time limit) we also had a number of teams/individuals that wanted to get all the controls, were learning orienteering, or walked the course and enjoyed the parks.

Orienteerers began arriving by 10:40 am. By 11:00 we had a small crowd milling around the registration table waiting for a start time or for an orienteering tutorial.

Our guests from San Diego were first on the course in the advanced division. Results showed that this was a closely contested course all the way down through the ranks - everyone was in striking distance of another competitor. As expected, Sergey won the advanced division in under 40 minutes while getting all the controls. A little unexpected, because he was an unknown and was also unfamiliar with the parks, Craig also got all of the controls and finished within the time limit for 2nd place. Jeff and Kristin pushed each other for that 3rd spot with Jeff barely finishing under the magical 46:00 (that’s when the 5 point penalty kicks in) to squeeze out Kristin. Other memorable moments were the bloodied legs of teammates Rich and Matt who didn’t let thorn bushes slow them down; Doug who went with the strategy of get them all and just take my penalty points (didn’t work too badly); and Lee who only joined us on Saturday because he bumped into me setting up the course as he was about to embark on his Robie Creek training run.

The beginning course was no less heavily contested and there was definitely diversity within this group. We had first timers, others with intermediate experience and some with advanced experience. The enjoyment of doing the course with their children or a friend is what drew this mix together - everyone in this division was on a team. Gregory and Samantha, recent transplants to Boise from Virginia, took the checkered flag on the beginners course by getting all the controls. Not far behind was Dave and his jogging stroller. Next came our State Patrolman out of Burley, Ken "I can jump any creek" Beckner and his son Peter. And a little further down the list was Jim who we watched run parts of the course with Nicholas on his shoulders. All new orienteerers should be very pleased with their results, this was a very difficult beginners course and all of you picked up some tough controls (especially the one by the pond on the west side of the course). I thank all the new comers for adding to the enjoyment of our meet. We hope we’ll see you again.

Lastly we have the intermediate division. Masha made quick work of the course in 36 minutes flat. Then there was a tie for 2nd on points with Dondi and her trusty steed, er....dog Sage, getting the nod by finishing in a quicker time. Donna and Maggie took 3rd place by tackling the intermediate course on their own for the first time, which allowed Jeff Decker to run the advance course (great job girls!).

Thanks go out to the meet’s co-director, Dan Herring. He was instrumental on registering participants, timing, tallying scores, verifying maps, and picking up controls.

Additional thanks to everyone who hung around and helped pick up controls!

Please join us for our next meet on April 22nd in Hulls Gulch. See the CTOC web site for additional information.
