Hello orienteers,
Our event brought an end to the dry spell with about an inch of fresh snow which greeted the participants in last weekend's ski/snowshoe event, helping to soften the hard trail conditions. Luckily the warm temperatures (37' F.) kept the roads from being icy and the snow let up in time for the start. We had a good turn out on the intermediate course thanks to a youth group that came from New Meadows to try the sport out. They all seemed to enjoy it, despite getting a bit worn out on their rented snow shoes. Scott and Mary moved up to the intermediate course and came in with the fastest time. Local orienteering veterans, the Rygh/Armstrong family (including a 4 yr. old) went together on the beginner course, some with new skate skis. They managed the already not very skate-ski friendly course well and with young Austin leading the way discovered a difficult route to one of the controls, yet nailed it right on. Jeff yet again dominated the advanced course by taking every opportunity to cut the distance with his snowshoes, going several routes that would be very difficult in the summer. We worked up a healthy appetight and met at Crusty's for salad bar and pizza afterwards.
Thanks to all who participated and especially Jeff and Bill for helping with control pickup since I had sprained my thumb the night before while setting controls. Hope to see you next time at the combined Ann Morisson/ Julia Davis meet March 19!
